Better Off Dead

  1. I, too just finished this most recent chapter in the Jack Reacher. While I didn't dislike this book as much as WCD, I do echo his disappointment. It has all the tenants of a Jack Reacher story . . . out walking and comes across someone in trouble . . . helps out . . . tracks down the bad guys . . . dispatches said bad guys . . . leaves the people he'd helped . . . heads off, walking of course . . . to his next destination. Plenty of fisticuffs. Copious amounts of blood. Gun play and the resultant body count. But this one just didn't seem to have the heart of previous books. The presentation seemed formulaic. Like Andrew Child's writing was restricted by a template. And the other thing that bugged me about the story was the small border town in Arizona. If it weren't from some waitresses in diners, the town would've been deserted. All the stuff going on and not a bystander to be seen? I'll check in with the 2022 book, but if it's as flat as this one, my time as a Reacher reader may becoming limited.
